Stanley Hotel

The Story Behind Stanley Hotel

Congratulations. You've found the most famous haunted hotel of all time. Original owners Freelan Oscar Stanley and his wife Flora dreamed up and completed construction on the Stanley Hotel in 1909. It would eventually lead to the inspiration of the great Stephen King horror novel, The Shining.

But is it actually haunted? Most definitely. F.O. and Flora Stanley are both very active spirits in the hotel. They continue about their daily routines in caring for and maintaining the hotel. There have also been reports of Flora playing the piano in the ballroom.

And they're not the only spirits to haunt the hotel. Famously, Room 418 is brimming with paranormal activity. Guests have said they often hear children's laughter in and around the room.

Then there's the time Stephen King and his wife briefly resided in the Stanley Hotel. The paranormal energy was so strong that he had an incredibly vivid dream one night that he felt was like a message from God. He was jerked awake and after regaining his composure, he knew exactly how to write one of his most famous books.
